    ☺☺☺------------------------
In this story the use imagery is quite significant. The author has used imagery in almost every paragraph.Somtimes, the author has used other literacy divices like;simily and metaphor,to describe the imagery. The author has wrote this story in a specific way that every part of the story creates an image in the readers mind.
    Some of the imageries are....

  3. Sonny's Blues - Setting:
    - Setting acts as a big role in this story.
    - Setting describes the place and time.
    - This story takes place in Harlem in 19th century.
    - The setting makes the story perfect and truth, because in 19th century, racism was the biggest issue.
    - The black people were treated as low human being in this century, particularly in Harlem.
    - This story is about a black family, how they suffered by racism. What are the problems the faced.

  4. Sonny's Blues-Theme:
-racism in Harlem in the 1950's -1960's for the blackpeople (e.g. sonny's uncles death, he was killed by the white people)

-druguse (sonny is drug addicted)almost everyone was alcoholic in 1950's-1960's (sonnys uncle and his dad)

-relationship between sonny and the narrator

  5. Anojah,
Absolutely: Sonny's Blues has in it imagery on almost every page; most often, the imagery is in the form of metaphor, simile, and paradox. At other times, the imagery is created by Baldwin's highly vivid and visual descriptions of the settings in this short story.

  6. Sruthi,
Yep, racisim is a MAJOR theme in this short story. And yes, the man vs. man conflict (narrator vs. Sonny) is one of several MAJOR themes/conflicts in this story. Of course, as you note, drug use, and specifically heroin use, is at the centre of the story as well.

  7. Priyanka,
While setting is VERY important in Sonny's Blues, as you note, remember that I told the class that this story takes place likely somewhere in the 1950s although things didn't change for Blacks living in Harlem until the 1970s. As it turns out, the first time Sonny's Blues appeared in print was in 1957 ;-).
NOTE: the 19th Century means 1800-1899; we are now in the 21st Century: 2000-2099.
